A very fine example of the underrated Reliant Scimitar GT, this 1965 SE4 is the actual London Motor Show car from that year.
A mere 297 were made with the straight six Ford Zephyr engine before the design was re-engineered to accept the Essex V6. A rare car indeed.
This example has benefited from much expenditure over recent years and presents superbly in French Racing Blue. The paintwork is to a high standard and is free of the blemishes so often associated with fibreglass bodied cars.
Recent work includes the fitment of a new silencer and tailpipe by Maniflow, new brake master cylinder, distributor, starter solenoid, ignition switch and front sidelights.
The engine received a top end rebuild in 2019 with new valve seats being fitted.
Subsequently the car passed through the hands of the leading early Scimitar specialist and there are bills on file for all the work carried out including the fitment of a replacement gearbox, overdrive and a new clutch.
The interior is in good order with the distinctive two colour early seats and matching door cards free of rips and tears. The headlining is good and the instruments have all been rebuilt in recent years. Some sections of the carpets could do with replacement, however.
The brightwork is all in good condition.
The boot carpet looks new and the boot contains a jack, toolkit and spare wire wheel.
In the Scimitar the Zephyr engine is fitted with triple SU carburettors and gives an output of 120bhp at 5,000rpm. With a kerb weight of 21.5cwt performance was impressive by the standards of the day and the 20 gallon fuel tank gives an impressive touring range.
The car comes with a comprehensive file which includes invoices, Ford Zephyr workshop manual, a copy owner’s handbook and period press reviews.
The Ogle designed GT body is both pretty and distinctive. With its well developed chassis and power train the Scimitar makes a very attractive alternative to other more expensive cars of similar performance.
A video of the car can be viewed on the St Andrews Autos YouTube channel.
