This delightful Riley RME looks very smart in black over green and is complemented by the very original interior.
The car was restored from the chassis up in the 1980s and has covered only 4,000 miles since. It is still on the original bores.
First registered on 1 August, 1952, the RME is an early example of the model which superseded the original RMA. Nothing is known of its history until it was purchased as a restoration project in 1981 by John Atkinson of Coalville, Leicester. He took seven years to fully restore the car and retained it until 2010 during which time it won numerous awards at local shows. It has had but one single owner since.
Being an older restoration there are some paintwork faults, in particular some cracking on the scuttle, nearside wing and boot lid and some damage to the nearside rear wing but the car nevertheless presents well. The interior is largely original save for the carpets and headlining and is much the better for it while the brightwork also is in good condition.
Our test drive showed the car to perform well with the rack and pinion steering proving a joy and the hydro mechanical brakes pulling the car up square. The twin high camshaft motor is very well mannered yet provides more than adequate performance.
All the instruments work save for the clock. All electrical items work correctly and discreet direction indicators are fitted in addition to the original semaphores.
The Dunlop tyres have some cracking to the sidewalls so new tyres will be fitted before the car is sold.
This is a very nice driving RM which starts readily and shows good oil pressure at all times. It has been well maintained and comes with an original workshop manual and instruction book. There are some photographs of the restoration work in the history file which also contains all MoT certificates issued since restoration.
