1948 Citroen Light Fifteen. Rare and desirable Slough built small boot model.

The Traction Avant Citroen, introduced in 1934, was a technological tour de force thanks to its ground-breaking combination of a monocoque chassis, front-wheel drive, torsion bar independent suspension, hydraulic brakes, and (from 1936) rack-and-pinion steering.

The Light Fifteen was the UK built version and was considerably better appointed compared with its French counterpart, boasting leather upholstery, a wooden dashboard, 12-volt electrics and of course right hand drive.

This particular example was built in 1948 and was subsequently exported to New Zealand, returning to the UK in 1992. Between 2015 and 2016 it was extensively restored by a knowledgeable Citroen enthusiast. Work carried out included a full engine rebuild, gearbox overhaul, new clutch, back axle replacement, upgraded electrics and lights, body restoration and a good quality retrim.

Finished in Citroen Blanc Cremant the car looks very smart although there are now signs of ageing in the paintwork with some areas of microblistering and the doors could do with refinishing.

The interior is in lovely order with the recently upholstered red leather seats and matching carpets. The cord-bound Bluemels Brooklands steering wheel adds a nice sporting and very English touch.

Under the bonnet all is clean and tidy as is the fully carpeted boot.

The 1,911cc overhead valve four cylinder engine starts readily and settles to a quiet idle while the ammeter shows a healthy charge from the dynamo.

Our test drive was something of a revelation. The steering, ride and handling are all exemplary and much as expected but the real surprise was the willingness of the engine which made the car a real joy to drive and when combined with the advanced chassis, surprisingly high average speeds are easily attainable. It really is a modern motor car and must have caused a sensation in 1934.

All the electrical items work correctly including the semaphore indicators. There are a few discreet upgrades for modern motoring notably the fitment of inertia reel seat belts, flashing indicators and LED bulbs. The car runs on the correct Michelin X tyres which are all in excellent condition.

There is a large history file accompanying the car which includes restoration and servicing receipts, Instruction Book, Service Manual, old MoTs, photos of the engine rebuild and old New Zealand documents.

UK built right hand drive models with the prettier small boot rarely come up for sale so this is an opportunity not to be missed by the Citroen enthusiast.
