The Humber 9/28 Saloon, introduced in 1928, was the last in the line of beautifully engineered Humber light cars and this 1929 example is quite possibly the nicest example you will find. The indicated mileage of 37,600 is understood to be genuine.

This particular example was delivered to A. Mulliner Ltd of Northampton on 29th April 1929. It was retained by the original owner until January 1947, having been stored during the war, passing to Mr Edward Locke who overhauled the car and won a class award at the 1952 Humber Register Midland Rally. It was then put on axle stands and remained unused for the next fifty years. Mr Locke started a renovation of the car in 1994 but died in 2003 before completing the work. In 2004 it was bought by Mr Alan Connolly who, with friend Colin Freeman, carried out further work including a professional respray. However, in 2011 Colin Freeman also died before the car was finished and in 2015 it entered the care of Mr Peter Gowan who, with the assistance of Roger Guest’s Humber Workshop, carried out a very thorough mechanical rebuild. The interior was then completely restored by Simon Franklin of Colchester.

There is a comprehensive record of the work carried out by the Humber Workshop with bills amounting to £20,000. Engine work included white metalling, crank re-grinding, new pistons etc.

Extensive renovation was also carried out to the gearbox, clutch, brakes, hubs, back axle, dynastart, autovac and much more.

A new custom made exhaust was fitted, the electrics re-wired and new Longstone tyres fitted.

Following all the mechanical work, it was decided to re-trim the car. The seats have been recovered with new hide, new head and sidelining has been fitted along with new, correctly embossed, door cards and new carpets fitted. New ‘lace’ between the head and sidelining has been specially made by the original supplier and all the wooden trim has been renovated by a specialist company. The results are quite superb.

The Humber is a ready starter and runs nicely showing excellent oil pressure – the 9/28 has a fully pressurised bottom end. All the controls have a well-engineered feel to them and the car is enjoyable to drive with precise steering, a lovely gearbox and good brakes – the 9/28 at last benefitting from coupled four wheel brakes. Performance is of course modest but the ioe engine is very willing.

There are several files with the car containing a record of work carried out, invoices, registration documents plus handbooks and an original parts book.

A luggage trunk accompanies the car and fits onto the folding rack at the back of the car.

Vintage Humbers are hugely underrated cars. The engineering was undoubtedly conservative but they are of high quality and very robust. They are well supported by the Humber Register and this delightful saloon will give pleasure for years to come. It is eligible for VSCC Light Car Section events.

A video of the car can be viewed on the St Andrews Autos YouTube channel.
