1926 Jowett Long Two, two seater and dickey
“The little engine with the big pull”; so ran the slogan used by Jowett to promote their long lived flat twin engine cars and vans.
This particular example was first registered in Birmingham on 3rd September, 1926 so it will shortly be having its one hundredth birthday. It soon moved north up to Strachur in Argyllshire where it was to spend the rest of its life until last year. It was in single ownership from 1982 until then and was restored in the 1980s.
It still presents well in light blue with black wings, interior and hood.
The engine starts on the first pull of the handle, once the starting drill is mastered and settles down to a nice even tickover. There is an electric starter but it’s usually best to hand crank it from cold.
Everything is in working order and the dynamo puts out a healthy charge.
The wheels are shod with Dunlop tyres which are in good order with no cracks in the sidewalls.
Under the bootlid is the dickey seat and being a long chassis model there is plenty of room to stow luggage, tools etc.
An interesting history file accompanies the car with some bills dating back to 1933. Also included is an original Instruction Book, a copy of a Zenith carburetter booklet and lots of technical information.
Also included with the car are two crates of spare parts, jack and wheelbrace.
Jowetts have a loyal following and are well served by the Jowett Car Club who hold extensive stocks of spare parts for all models.
VSCC Light Car Section eligible and capable of acquitting itself well in driving tests and trials.
A video of the car can be viewed on the St Andrews Autos YouTube channel.
