1931 Peugeot 201 Berline in excellent condition.
Although restored some time ago the little Peugeot still presents superbly both inside and out.
Delivered to its first owner in Normandy the Peugeot was requisitioned by invading German forces during the Second World War. After the conflict was over the car lay abandoned for the next forty years until it was rescued and restored by an enthusiast in France at a cost in excess of 25k Euros.
Fifteen years ago the Peugeot was imported to the UK and has been lovingly maintained since.
A rarity in the UK – possibly one of only five – the 201 was introduced in 1929 and was the first Peugeot to use the brand’s three digit naming system with a zero in the middle. It is a simple 10HP car with a four cylinder side valve engine and three speed gearbox. 1931 saw the introduction of the 201C as featured here and importantly was one of the first mass-produced cars to feature independent front suspension, via transverse leaf in this instance with quarter elliptics at the rear.
The paintwork is excellent with a deep shine and just a few age related marks. The interior is a joy to behold with its bold cloth upholstery. The headlining is in perfect condition and the carpets remain in excellent order.
The brightwork is all good with the exception of the front bumper which could do with re-plating.
Turn on the fuel from the scuttle mounted tank, pull out the choke and the engine starts easily, settling down to a quiet idle and showing good oil pressure. On the road the little Peugeot motors along very well, albeit at a modest pace, with pleasant steering. The clutch and gearbox work perfectly and the brakes are extremely effective.
The Peugeot has recently had a dynamo rebuild, is fitted with new Michelin tyres and has an MoT valid until March 2027.
The car is in very original condition with the addition of the aftermarket ‘pig’s ear’ indicators.
There is a small history file containing photos of the restoration and a dating certificate from Peugeot Citroen as well as some recent invoices and magazine articles.
Full of Gallic charm, the Peugeot stands out from the crowd and offers straightforward pre-war motoring on a modest budget.
