The Renault 8 S was itself the sporting variant of the range, equipped with the lively 1,108cc engine that endowed the car with eager performance and a character far from that of the standard model. With the benefit of four-wheel disc brakes (a first for any production car) and a finely balanced chassis, it remains an immensely entertaining and engaging car to drive.

This stunning example has been attractively prepared in the style of the iconic Gordini rally cars, finished in the evocative French Racing Blue livery with contrasting twin white stripes and complemented by quad headlamps. It sits on a set of period ‘Cosmic’ alloy wheels, colour-coded to the body and shod with goodyear tyres, they give the car an unmistakably authentic competition-inspired appearance.

Imported into the United Kingdom from Portugal in 2023, the Renault is understood to have formed part of a retired Renault main dealer’s private collection prior to acquisition.

The interior is in excellent and pleasingly original condition, while mechanically the car has been fully serviced, with oil and filters renewed and the braking system overhauled.

An electric fuel pump has been fitted to assist the original mechanical unit, reducing cranking after periods of inactivity and improving ease of starting without detracting from the car’s character.

This rarely seen Renault 8 S, rich in period competition association, represents a charming homage to one of the most successful small rally cars of its era.

Comes with UK V5C and accompanying import documentation.

Underside is very clean and rust free .

Few compact saloons of the late 1960s and early 1970s caused a stir quite like the Renault 8. Rear-engined, rear-wheel drive, light in weight and blessed with wonderfully responsive handling, it formed the basis of the legendary Gordini models that achieved remarkable success in touring car racing and international rallying. Their heavily tuned engines, vivid blue paintwork, auxiliary lamps and purposeful stance became an enduring symbol of French competition heritage and continue to inspire enthusiasts today.

They really shone in competition, winning the prestigious Tour de Corse (Corsica Rally) 3 times running, beating French rivals like the Alpine A110, the fearsome Alfa Romeo GTA and even the revered Porsche 911 in 1966, truly remarkable accolades for a homologated mass-market economy car.
